BMRC Lab Policies

 
  This is the list of policies for use of the laboratories run by the BMRC.

Supported Projects

  • BMRC no longer supports projects. However, if you somehow are granted the privilege of lab use, read on...
  • Only registered users may use BMRC facilities. Registered users are the faculty, staff and students of the BMRC, plus users participating in a supported project.
  • All supported projects must create a web page presenting the work done using BMRC facilities.

Use of workstations

  • No one else may log on using your username and password.
  • You may not make any changes to equipment configuration in any way.
  • Time on all Lab workstations must be reserved if you want to guarantee your access to the machine.
    • Reservation sheets for the computers are found on the Lab walls.
    • Those who have reserved time, have priority on use of the machines.
    • If no one has reserved time, BMRC staff working on specific projects have priority.
    • Anyone more than 15 minutes late, who has not called in, forfeits their reservation.
  • You must log off at the end of each session.
    • If you will be away from the terminal for more than 15 minutes, you must log off unless there is a process running.
    • Computers that are not in use should be left on. Monitors should be turned off.
    • Do not move equipment from station to station in the Lab.
    • Do not unplug SCSI cables or terminators, video or audio cables or any other cables.

Taking equipment out of the Lab

    Borrowing BMRC equipment is permitted only by arrangement with BMRC staff members.
    Before you take any equipment out of the Lab -- you must fill out a Sign Out sheet which can be found:

    130 Dwinelle in the basket by the telephone


    In order to guarantee the availability of cameras, lights, etc. -- you must reserve the equipment by putting your name on the Reservation sheets which can be found:

    130 Dwinelle on the Lab walls


    Cameras may be checked out for 24 hours only. You may be requested to leave some form of ID (Student ID / Driver's License).

    Before you may receive any magnetic or optical media from the Lab -- you must fill out the Sign Out sheet which can be found:

    514 Soda on the door of the equipment cabinet in the Lab Annex.
    This applies to BMRC staff and students as well as all supported projects

Use of computer resources

  • You may not install any applications, control panels, system extensions, or any other software on the machines without the explicit permission of the systems administrators.
  • You may not make changes to the software configuration or control panels on any of the machines
  • You may make changes only to those files in your user directory, or a directory in which you have been specifically authorized to store files. Unless specifically granted, you do not have permission to store files on the local hard drives of any workstations
  • You may use any removable media that you own or have been issued on any workstation.
  • To receive an account on the video workstations: 514 Soda -- Maggie or Rosalinda
    130 Dwinelle -- Workstation #1 or Workstation #2

    we require that you go through a video processing training session. The training is conducted by the Lab Assistant and will cover:

    1. use of the video & audio equipment in the Lab.
    2. the process of digitizing material and editing it in Premiere
    3. the proper place to store your digitized material during your project.

Problem forms

    If something does not work the way you expect it to work:
    1. talk to and/or email the Lab Assistant
    2. if the lab assistant is unable to resolve the problem, fill out a problem form and leave it in the "in basket" in the Lab
    3. if you still have problems contact the Lab Administrator

    Appropriate lab behavior

    You must leave the lab clean and neat.

  • All paper trash must be placed in the trash cans in the Lab.
  • All uneaten food items, or other garbage must be removed from the Lab and placed in the trash cans in the hallways or rest rooms.
  • All media including disks, tapes, CD's, etc. must be returned to where they came from.
  • All printed material including manuals, binders, etc. must be returned to where they came from.

University computer use policy

    BMRC file servers are to be used only for BMRC projects. You may not store or publish material that is in breach of the campus computer user policy or in breach of U. S. copyright law.


    Any violation of the above rules may result in the immediate deletion of your account on one or all of the machines without further notice.
