Diane Harley, Ph.D. Executive Director, Berkeley Multimedia Research Center Academic Coordinator, Center for Studies in Higher Education University of California, Berkeley 510/642-4343 dianeh@uclink2.berkeley.edu Diane Harley's teaching and research experience is in both the biological and social sciences. Over the last decade, she has conducted experiments that merge scholarship and digital media production as a way of extending the reach and the quality of public education. Her work has included developing multimedia education programs and managing partnerships with the California and Florida Departments of Education, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty Museum, The University Museum at the University of Pennsylvania, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the National Science Foundation, ABC News, and various universities, publishers, and software developers. Currently she splits her time between two research centers at UCB: as Executive Director of the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center (BMRC) and as Academic Coordinator at the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE). Since returning to UC Berkeley from the private sector, Diane has been involved in the development of a variety of instructional technology programs on campus including the Interactive University Project and the Humanities and Technology Project, the latter which she directed. Her work at CSHE has been supported by a grant from the Hewlett Foundation, among others. She is currently overseeing the Higher Education in the Digital Age project. As part of this project, Diane has developed a Citation Database, a web-based information clearinghouse which provides a varied and current collection of searchable resources that are of interest to a large community of scholars, administrators, and practitioners. Most recently, she and I. Michael Heyman have been awarded, in partnership with the BMRC and the College of Chemistry, a two-year, $350,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's Cost Effective Uses of Technology in Teaching program initiative. The project, "Digital Chemistry 1A: An Economic Analysis of Technology Enhancements in a Large Lecture Course at UC Berkeley," brings together a diverse and distinguished team of researchers from Economics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and the Graduate School of Education. Diane recently received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to hold a working summit to develop a common understanding of the models employed by universities to create, finance, and disseminate on-line education both domestically and globally. The title of the project is "University Teaching as E-Business: Research and Policy Agendas."; Diane Harley's publications include articles in Science and the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and presented conference papers in the areas of anthropology and instructional technology. She has overseen the design of museum exhibits and the publication of a number of web sites and multimedia curricular materials, including those developed in collaboration with the California Department of Education, Encyclopedia Britannica, and National Geographic. She has organized numerous conferences and colloquia at UC Berkeley, including CyberSemester, a campus-wide event directed by the Chancellor. Diane Harley has an M.A. (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) in Anthropology from UC Berkeley. Her academic areas of specialty include the evolution of human behavior and culture, human development, and comparative functional anatomy. She has also spent some time as a field archaeologist and as a "post-doc"in video and media production.
